In January 2027 the Sundance Film Festival opens in Boulder for the first time, after more than four decades in Park City. It runs 21 to 31 January, and it is the first year of a ten-year agreement.

Unlike the old Park City and Salt Lake City split, everything sits in one city. Most downtown and campus venues are within a fifteen-minute walk of each other.
The Walkability Trap
Here is the honest part. Fifteen minutes is a pleasant walk in October. In late January it is a different proposition.
Boulder in January is cold, dark by five, and occasionally snowing sideways. A festival day means four or five venue changes, often on a tight turnaround, sometimes carrying a coat you did not need indoors.
And Chautauqua is the outlier that breaks every plan. It sits at the base of the Flatirons, uphill and genuinely separate from the downtown cluster. Nobody is walking there between screenings.

The Parking Reality
Downtown Boulder garages are finite in ordinary weeks. During eleven days of festival, with CU campus lots partly committed and Chautauqua’s own access already restricted by the city’s open space rules, the maths stops working.
Add snow removal narrowing kerb space and the calculation gets worse. Being dropped at the door is not a luxury during Sundance. It is the only version of the day that runs on time.
