The Winter Park Express is the only ski train in the country that drops you at a resort base rather than a nearby town. The platform sits roughly a hundred feet from the lifts. You step off, click in, and ski.
It is a genuinely brilliant piece of infrastructure, and it solves exactly one leg of your day. Boulder to Winter Park ski train transport is about the other two.

The train departs Denver Union Station at 7:00 a.m.
From Boulder, that means leaving your front door around six. At that hour the Flatiron Flyer has barely started, rideshare availability is thin, and a driver who accepts a 5.50 a.m. request is coming from somewhere that makes them late.
Miss it and there is no second train. That is the whole risk, and it sits entirely in the first forty-five minutes of your day.

Why the Return Leg Is Worse
Everyone plans the morning. Almost nobody plans 7:05 p.m.
You have skied all day, you are carrying gear, and you are standing outside Union Station in the dark in February with several hundred other people who just got off the same train. Rideshare pricing responds exactly the way you would expect.
A booked vehicle is already there. That is the entire product on the return leg, and it is worth more than the morning run.
What the Train Gets Right
Worth being clear: this is a good service and we are not arguing against it.
- 62 miles through the Moffat Tunnel — the shortest route in the Amtrak system and one of the most scenic.
- Skis and snowboards travel free as carry-on, in a dedicated baggage area.
- Fares started at $9 one-way last season, with children from $4.50, subsidised under state legislation.
- Sightseer lounge car and an onboard café.
- No I-70. No Berthoud Pass, no traction law, no parking.

One Thing That Changed for 2026/27
Winter Park lifts now open at 8:00 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from 5 December 2026 through 4 April 2027.
The train does not arrive until 9:11 a.m. So a weekend day-tripper gives up the first hour of fresh corduroy. If that matters to you, go up the night before instead — which is a different booking and one we run constantly.
